Healthy Vision Month

Healthy Vision Month happens during May to help spread awareness and educate people about the importance of good eye health and the benefits to our overall health. The goal is to spread awareness on the importance of annual comprehensive eye exams.

While older adults typically have more vision issues, vision problems can arise at any age. It’s estimated that only one out of seven preschool-aged children receive an annual eye exam, which is problematic. Many eye conditions such as myopia, amblyopia, and strabismus(lazy eye) can be treated in children if they are seen at an early age.

Here are some tips for maintaining healthy eyes:

  • Schedule regular eye exams: Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining healthy eyes
  • Protect your eyes from the sun: Prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays can damage your eyes.
  • Practice good eye hygiene: Good eye hygiene is crucial for preventing eye infections.
  • Maintain a healthy diet: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help with overall health, but especially eye health!
  • Take breaks from digital screens: Prolonged use of digital screens can cause eye strain, headaches, and dry eyes.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, andother eye diseases.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise can help reduce the risk of developing certain eye diseases such asglaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
