Dry Eye Evaluation
Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem affecting patients of all ages. It is a problem that is becoming more prevalent with the increased use of computers and digital devices. Dry eye is a condition in which a person does not have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. The tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye, reducing risk of eye infections, and providing clear vision. This can impact your quality of life as it can cause fluctuations in vision, burning and irritation, light sensitivity, watery eyes, and tired eyes.
Mild cases of dry eyes can often be managed using other-the-counter artificial tear solutions. We recommend using preservative-free artificial tear solutions as they contain fewer additives which can further irritate the eyes. People with dry eyes that do not respond to artificial tears alone will need to take additional steps to treat their dry eyes with a dry eye evaluation at our office.
Punctal plugs are used to keep natural tears in the eyes longer by blocking the tear ducts in your eyes responsible for tears draining. The tear ducts are blocked with tiny collagen or silicone plugs that can be removed if necessary.
Our doctors can also prescribe prescription eye drops, such as Restasis or Xiidra, to help control the inflammation on the surface of your eyes.
Other treatments may include omega 3 supplements, warm compresses, lid hygiene lipiflow thermal pulsation, intense-pulsed therapy, and more. For proper treatment, please see us for a dry eye evaluation to determine a dry eye treatment plan suitable for you.
